Signs you’re an Alcohol Addict

altAlcohol addiction is a very messy disease.

It tends to claim lives in some, and result in poorer health in others. Here are some potent signs of alcohol addiction.

1. Peripheral Symptoms

Alcoholic inebriation is nothing less than slow poisoning. While it immensely damages your system, on the periphery it manifests itself as gradual and insatiable urges for drinking. Some of these symptoms are listed below.

a. Social Urges

Alcohol addiction kicks in with its constant urge to drink at all occasions. If you begin to associate every social event or gathering with alcohol consumption, then you are developing the initial signs of addiction. Most alcohol addicts tend to treat bars as their favourite haunts and worry incessantly about getting their drinks, when it decides to close down. This sense of panic is one of the prime symptoms of becoming an addict.

b. Withdrawal

Excessive alcohol consumption tends to induce profuse cold sweat, nervous tremors and nausea. The manifestation of these symptoms leads one to assume that consuming more will make things right. This tends to worsen their health. One of the most important signs of alcohol addiction is social withdrawal. People choose to be lonely, moody and apathetic to circumstances. Having one or more of these symptoms means that you’re developing an alcohol addiction.

c. Relationships at Stake

Being an alcoholic can adversely affect your interpersonal relationships. Most people tend to realize this, but cannot seem to do much about it. Their inebriation gets the better of them and propels their behaviour to violent fronts, causing them to harm people they care for. Alcohol addiction can also affects one’s work culture and affect their performance and efficiency.

2. Psychological Implications

A large part of the addiction is manifested in anxiety, chronic depression and suicidal behaviour. Alcohol tends to dull the nervous system and prolonged addiction can give way to severe shaking, increased heartbeats and occasional seizures. These symptoms are common manifestations of the life-threatening delirium tremens, which can be fatal if not diagnosed in time.

3. Physical Implications

Over-consumption and addiction can lead to insomnia, erectile dysfunction and memory loss at the least, before giving way to renal failure, cardiac arrests and nervous breakdowns. Severe alcohol addiction can prove to be extremely fatal, if not treated in time.

Alcohol dependence is a disorder in its own right, and is a gateway to future health and psychological problems. If you have experience one or more of the above-mentioned symptoms for an extended amount of time, you are requested to contact your physician at the earliest.

When my sister and I were little, our dad would announce his arrival every evening by whistling outside the window.
