Jessica Chastain Paints Her Hands Purple For YSL's Manifesto Fragrance Campaign

Like many new faces of fragrance, snippets of information on the ins and outs of the latest signing are leaked via the beauty industry rumour mill (much to our delight, might we add). So, after our joy at discovering Jessica Chastain is the new face of YSL back in June, finally we have all the details about the brand's new muse. What's more, we've been treated to the first (official) look at the 'wow' campaign for the Manifesto scent.

Making a statement was clearly mandatory for YSL's perfume considering their previous campaigns have caused a stir (Sophie Dahl utterly starkers, par exemple) and this image of flame-haired Jessica, shot by Mert and Marcus, makes a striking but beautiful statement. Just check out the actress' purple-painted hands, the shade synonymous with YSL.

'It was the color of absolute seduction for Mr. Saint Laurent,' Stephan Bezy, international general manager of Yves Saint Laurent Beauté at L’Oréal tells WWD. And the purple hue continues in the design of the seductive bottle too. 'The amethyst-hued central section could call to mind a diamond-cut jewel or belt,' says Bezy. Plus, just like a couture gown, the bottle gets its own piece of YSL style.

The latest scent though is being hailed as the second pillar in the YSL fragrance portfolio next to Opium, a scent known only too well by Jessica after an aunt gave her a bottle as a teenager. 'I came to school wearing Opium, which is so mature, it made me feel glamorous; it made me feel grown-up,' the actress reveals. But being the face of a beauty brand wasn’t always something Jessica was comfortable with.

Talking to WWD, the star admits that she enjoys becoming a character, rather than being just being Jessica Chastain (which we think would be rather fabulous!). 'It’s not something I really thought that I would do before until, of course, Yves Saint Laurent called. If you’re going to do something like this, it’s a very big deal to do it for Yves Saint Laurent. But what it does is it makes you very vulnerable because you don’t have a character to hide behind.'  Well, Jess, we think you look rather marvellous being you.
