Top 10 Upcoming Sporting Events of 2013

alt2012 was a great year in sports with many new records created at the London Olympics, West Indies winning the ICC T-20 World Cup, Andy Murray winning the first Gland Slam of his career among others.

Now, as we have entered 2013, here’s a look at the Top 10 sporting events to watch out for

Australian Open tennis

Being the first grand slam of the year, the Australian Open is keenly awaited by all. Last year, Novak Djokovic defeated Nadal last year in the longest final in history. Due to Nadal backing out from the tournament on account of an injury this year, a repeat is out of question. Federer, Djokovic and Murray would be keening eyeing the trophy to set the winning tone for the rest of the year.

Wimbledon

Roger Federer will be determined to defend his 2012 title, though he will face tough competition from not just his arch rival Rafael Nadal, but also Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic in Wimbledon this year. The grass court tournament is perhaps the best Grand Slam of the year and with the tough competition this year, it promises to be an exciting affair.

Ashes cricket series

It’ll be a treat to watch Australia taking on England in England in a bid to win the Ashes, one of the most exciting cricketing events. Both teams are in excellent form and let’s hope they’ll maintain the same form till July when the test series begins. The Australians, led by the efficient Michael Clarke, will be determined to win the Ashes trophy from England, who won it the last time. The two teams will meet again in Australia in November.

World Athletics Championships

Usain Bolt, the man who stole the show in the London Olympics will be the man to watch out for in the World Athletics Championships to be held in Moscow that is being held from August 10-18.

Super Bowl XLVII

The 47th edition of the Super Bowl, Super Bowl XLVII, is scheduled to be played in 2013 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana to determine the champion for the 2012 season. Scheduled to be held on February 3, it’s believed that Beyoncé, along with Destiny's Child and Jay-Z, will be performing at the Super Bowl halftime show.

African Cup of Nations

The Africa Cup of Nations is the main international association football competition in Africa, organised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). It will be the 29th Africa Cup of Nations this year. The winner of the tournament will qualify for the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil as the representative from CAF.

Champions League finals

Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo will be seen playing at his former home club at Old Trafford, as his team takes on Manchester United in their last 16 match. The 2013 UEFA Champions League Final will be played on May 25 at the Wembley Stadium in London, England.

Tour de France

The 2013 Tour de France will be even more special this year as it'll be the 100th Tour de France. Scheduled to start in Corsica on June 29, the tour will be the first to be completed only on French soil for ten years. It'll have 21 stages covering a total of 3,360 kilometres.

ICC Champions Trophy, England

To be held in England between June 6 and June 23, it will be the seventh and final ICC Champions Trophy. India and Pakistan will be seen taking on each other as they are placed in the same group. Eight teams will battle it out to claim the trophy for the last time.

French Open

After suffering from injuries for most of 2012, Rafael Nadal will be looking to win his eight French Open title this year. He already holds the record of winning the French Open seven times. Being the largest clay-court tournament, it is a true test of endurance and grit.
