How to Reduce Uric Acid

altHyperuricema is a common disease among men. This results from the body’s inability to excrete uric acid.

The waste materials from the assimilation of purine and other crystalline compounds accumulate in the kidney and cause damage. Here are some steps to keep the blood urea level in control.

1. Non-Purine Diet

Avoid eating foods which have high purine content, especially animal protein, seafood, liver and some legumes. The consumption of refined carbohydrates tends to reduce the uric acid levels in blood, and keeps the body safe from risks of gout.

2. Limit Fructose Consumption

Fructose or ‘fruit sugar’ tends to increase the uric acid levels in the blood. Limiting the consumption of sugar-based beverages and aerated drinks will reduce blood urea levels significantly. Consume foods rich in fibre to counter the effect of uric acid influxes.

3. Avoid Alcohol

While alcohol alone does not affect health, when consumed with purine-rich foods, it tends to heighten the deposition of uric acid. Drinks with high content of yeast, like beer, tend to affect men more than any other drink does. Thus cutting down on your consumption of beer will keep gout at bay.

4. Anti-Inflammation Diet

With high uric acid levels, the body becomes increasingly susceptible to inflammation. Consuming anti-inflammatory foods, in this case, will help reduce the uric acid level in blood. Celery, pineapple and pumpkin seeds are excellent diuretics that help alkalize the acid content and improve protein absorption.

5. Water

An optimum consumption of water  will not only keep the body hydrated, but will dilute the uric acid levels and prompt the kidneys to pass them out of the body, as waste. Drinking 3 litres of water every day will reduce the uric acid levels in blood.

6. PH Balance

Maintaining an optimum acid-alkali balance is essential in keeping the urea levels in check. High acid content in the blood, known as acidosis, tends to hike the blood urea levels. To restore alkali-balance, include foods like vinegar, apples, cherries, lemons and baking soda in your diet.

By following the methods discussed above, you will be able to keep your uric acid levels in check. If your problem continues to persist, consult your physician at the earliest.
