Fantastic Flamingos of Khadir Island
Kutch, the largest district in India after Ladakh, is home to several birding hotspots. Among them is Khadir Island, a monsoon island that is cut off from the mainland in the monsoon. Every year in the monsoon, the seasonal rivers of Kutch overflow into the salt-marshes of the Great Rann of Kutch, causing them to flood over. After the rains recede this great expanse of low-lying marshland begins to dry up. The waters are rich in food and minerals for enormous colonies of Lesser Flamingos, which flock here. Yahoo! reader BHAVYA JOSHI sends us these stunning photos from a birding trip.
