Among the intriguing ruins of Angkor

Even the most casual mention of Cambodia's Siem Reap instantly brings to mind the celebrated ruins of Angkor Wat. But many more treasures await exploration in the immediate neighbourhood. Sprawling over 400-odd square kilometres, much of it densely forested, the Angkor Archaeological Park houses the awe-inspiring remains of several capitals of the Khmer Empire of the 9th to the 15th centuries. Besides the famous Vishnu temple of Angkor Wat, the largest Hindu temple complex in the world, other monuments include the Bayon Temple at Angkor Thom, known for its exquisite carvings.
