A landscape that dwarfs elephants
In Sri Lanka’s Minneriya National Park, herds of elephants gather during the dry season. Against this dramatic landscape of extensive grasslands and trees surrounding a tank, the elephants – despite their heft and bulk – appear diminutive. As you wait and watch, the elephants pass, astonishingly close, seemingly close enough to touch. In poetic black-and-white, ARATI RAO relates her intimate encounter with the gentle giants of Minneriya.

- A tyre puncture had set us back 45 minutes. If we did not make up lost time, we would be woefully late to witness the drama of the annual gathering of elephants on the grasslands of east-central Sri Lanka. I had only two days left to enjoy elephant interactions and I really did not want to miss a minute of it. When we finally set off, the driver did us proud and tore up the road giving Sebastian Vettel a run for his money.
