Indian weddings are an emulation of the trends and glitz built up by the on-screen marriages with the help of grand locations, opulent outfits, etc. So, there is no doubt that Bollywood celebrities would certainly go a notch higher in making their real weddings an affair to remember as well. Complete with theatrics of being a celebrity affair, real wedding of Bollywood become even more special when two sweethearts belonging to different religions come together. Filled with glamour and traditions, we are taking you through one such inter-religious marriage of Bollywood. Take a look at Amrita Arora's wedding with businessman Shakeel Ladak that took place in March 2009.
Amrita's mother is a Malayali Catholic, while her father is a Punjabi. And, her husband, Shakeel hails from a Muslim background. Thus, Amrita and Shakeel chose to honour all three cultures (Christian, Muslim and Punjabi) during their wedding ceremony. For this, a Christian wedding was held during the day and Nikah was conducted in the afternoon on different dates. There was also a mehendi and sangeet ceremony interspersed in their celebrations.
The couple exchanged rings and wedding vows, followed by a brunch at Mumbai’s famous Olive Restaurant. Amrita wore a white wedding gown designed by Ashley Rebello. Her outfit was an exquisite white concoction of silk, satin and Chantilly and vintage Emilio Ungaro lace covered in Swarovski crystals and rice pearls. Shakeel looked dapper in a black and grey suit.
The Nikah ceremony, followed by a grand reception at Taj Lands End, Mumbai, saw her in a traditional green lehenga and red choli making her look like a traditional Indian bride. She wore an emerald and polki set matching to her outfit. The colour green dominated this look clearly symbolising the preference of a true Muslim bride.
They borrowed the best!
This wedding actually encompassed the best traditions from different religions. First, engagement and wedding vows surely made for a royal English treat. Kareena Kapoor and Malaika Arora Khan were her bridesmaids. They looked resplendent in pure peach and caramel gowns.
Sangeet and Mehendi
A sangeet ceremony, hosted by Salman's sister Alvira Aghnihotri where ace choreographer Farah Khan choreographed a musical skit to please the bride and groom, was truly a desi Punjabi idea. Added to pre-wedding affair was a traditional mehendi ceremony, where Amrita was joined by her sister and close female friends from the industry.
Nikah and Reception
Then, a Nikah ceremony also gave everyone a slice of Muslim weddings. Their wedding hoopla ended with a grand reception ceremony. At the reception, Amrita wore a stunning red and gold lehenga with a short choli, designed by Vikram Phadnis, while Shakeel wore a black sherwani designed by Shantanu & Nikhil.
Amrita's sister Malaika took a keen interest in putting together the entire show with the help of the popular wedding planner Ravi Bakru to entertain 500 guests apart from the close friends and family. Of course, the wedding saw the who's who of the industry like Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Karisma Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Gauri Khan, Manish Malhotra amongst many others.
